An earthquake swarm was observed at the Cotabato Trench before the fatal magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8, but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the smaller tremors do not conclusively prove they triggered the major Mindanao quake.
